About this excursion

£108 per person

We’re starting a little later and returning later on this trip so we avoid some of the traffic jams we usually encounter on our way in and out of London. We’ll meet our knowledgeable Blue Badge Guide in the City of London and enjoy lunch before our tour.

In mediaeval London to buy something you simply went to the street of the name – Milk Street, Wood Street, Bread Lane. Powerful Livery Companies stamped their branding Museum of Brands 3all over the city and businesses advertised their services to an illiterate population with hanging signs.

As competition increased manufacturers sought to win our hearts and minds by building recognisable brands. It’s a fascinating day seeking out and decoding the visual clues all around us to see how business has sought to empty our pockets through the ages.

We visit the gallery at the new Design Museum that traces the evolution of design from its roots in the industrial revolution to its transformation by the digital explosion. Supermarket archaeologist, Robert Opie has spent 50 years collecting historical brands and packaging to form the Museum of Brands. He says it’s about ‘bringing together the pieces of a jigsaw until you see the picture of social change’ It’s ten thousand memories in one afternoon and it’s never more joyous than when you ds. reach your own nostalgia hot spot in the ‘time tunnel’.

The Museum’s gift shop sells retro inspired items, many created from images in the collection. In our quirky range you will find perfect gifts for all generations, including vintage posters, homewares, old fashioned toys and games to old school postcards, gift wrap and cards.

Tea and cake will be served before we head for home around 6.15pm.

The cost of this day includes your Blue Badge Guide for the day, entry to the new Design Museum and the Museum of Brands,  lunch + tea with cake before we leave for home and, of course, treats.
