In Aalborg, visit the Utzon Centre, the last building designed by Jørn Utzon – the architect behind the Sydney Opera House. Then stroll along the renovated waterfront with its abundance of restaurants, bars and other attractions. There’s a cosy atmosphere at this time of year, when the lights and festive delicacies – such as gløgg (mulled wine) and æbleskiver (spherical pancakes) – combine to create an unforgettable experience.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Encounter Christiansborg Palace (the Danish Parliament); explore the colourful cafés and shops of Strøget; and visit pretty Nyhavn, the waterfront district – there is something for everyone here. Also don’t miss Tivoli Gardens’ Christmas market, where you’ll discover twinkling lights, stalls selling gifts, decorations, arts and crafts, as well as snacks and hot drinks to keep you warm.

Wismar, Germany

Wismar is undoubtedly charming, especially the historic centre, which was given UNESCO World Heritage Status in 2002. A stylish range of architecture surrounds the graceful Market Square, which is traditionally transformed during the festive period with colourful fairy lights, decorations, music, and an array of embellished buildings and gift stalls to welcome you.

Cruising Kiel Canal

Glide through the German countryside along what is said to be the world’s busiest manmade waterway, the Kiel Canal. At 98 kilometres long, it links the North Sea with the Baltic and only smaller ships are able to navigate it.

Sail inland on one of Central Europe’s main waterways, winding past tall hills, vast plains and pretty towns.

Hamburg, Germany

Hamburg boasts Hanseatic League heritage harking back 700 years. See the impressive Rathaus (City Hall); admire St. Michael’s Church, the city’s main landmark; or enjoy a relaxing boat trip on Alster Lake. Savour a mug of glühwein (mulled wine) and get into the festive spirit with exhibitions, market stalls and thousands of lights illuminating the city.
