About this excursion
(From £1099pp) Our first port of call is Falmouth where you will find Britain’s most beautiful network of creeks and rivers. From here you can travel to the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, or perhaps, Tintagel Castle, believed to be the birthplace of King Arthur. Visit the Maritime Museum before heading over to the waterfront where you can sample some
local ale with your afternoon cod and chips.
Your next stop on this voyage is Northern Ireland’s beautiful Belfast. Bask in the sun as it gleams down on the Giant’s natural causeway – a must see for any first time explorer. There’s also a chance to visit the Harland and Wolff shipyard and the superb Titanic Experience or admire the views from Belfast Castle.
Next, Balmoral will move on to unspoilt moors of Stornoway, in the Isle of Lewis. The hills and landscapes are strewn with wildlife, where you can get up close and personal with red deer, otters and golden eagles on the southern island of Harris.
Your next port of call is Kirkwall. This location is braised with heritage from
Christian, Nordic and Celtic influences, which can be seen in the sculpted Churches and local buildings. Kirkwall is home to the impressive St. Magnus Cathederal, two excellent museums, cafes and craft shops.
Balmoral will then move onto the Shetland Islands. As you disembark in Lerwick, be sure to visit the Böd of Gremista, a “fishing booth” built in 1780 and now a museum located near the port. For a fantastic photo opportunity of the quaint harbour, head to Fort Charlotte and take in the panoramic views. See the pretty Loch of Tingwall with its Norse heritage and Shetland ponies.
Scotland is the next destination on your voyage, where you can delve into the
depths of Invergordon. Explore the history of Invergordon as its story is projected onto the walls of the town through murals and paintings by local artists. A shore tour will take you to explore the adventures and myths of the legendary monster, ‘Nessie’ and along the Great Glen to Inverness, ‘Capital of the Highlands’.
Northumberland is your last port of call. Watch dusk fall over Hadrian ’s Wall and be captivated by the mining heritage that is reflected in Woodhorn Museum and Northumberland Archives. There’s also a chance to visit stunning Alnwick Castle, used as a location for scenes of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films and home to beautiful grounds.
