Horse-Drawn Boat Cruise
£83 (per person)
We booked this trip about 10 years ago and it was so relaxing and enjoyable we thought we should do it again. The company, the Kennet Horse Drawn Boat Company have won prizes in recent years for the enjoyment they bring.
We start our day in Crofton with a leisurely cup of coffee, or tea and homemade cake in the unspoilt Wiltshire countryside at the Engine House at Crofton Beam Engines. Here you can see how the 200 year old engine pumps water to the highest point of the Kennet & Avon Canal. We then move on to Kintbury to join the Horse Drawn barge we have chartered for a leisurely four hour afternoon cruise along the Kennet and Avon Canal. A sandwich lunch with tea and cake are included.
Crofton Beam Engines houses the oldest working steam engines in the world still performing the job they were built for. Being still in working condition they represent an installation which has major international significance for industrial archaeology. A team of dedicated volunteers look after the whole site. You can either sit outside by the canal and enjoy the view or there’s a pleasant walk nearby.
Our afternoon will be spent on the Kennet and Avon Canal with a powerful horse pulling the barge, the ‘Kennet Valley’ – no noisy engines here! You’ll be able to meet the much-loved horses – Freddie, a young Welsh Cob cross-Shire Horse and Monty who’s doing very well with his ‘on-the-job’ training. During our journey you can get off and on the boat between the locks and walk along the tow path if you wish. Your lunch includes sandwiches made with locally made bread and handmade cake. Tea and coffee are also included on the boat.
The cost of this day includes luxury transport, entry to the Crofton Beam Engine House with tea/coffee and homemade cake, your four hour cruise on the canal with lunch, tea or coffee and, of course, treats.
A deposit of £20 will secure your place.
