The Gallops

With a history of over 350 years, and playing host to the first ever horserace under written rules, the Newmarket GallopsGallops sit at the very heart of horseracing. Spanning 2,500 acres, they comprise 50 miles of turf gallops, 14 miles of artificial tracks. They are used on a daily basis by over 2,000 horses in the care of over 80 trainers. The Training Grounds are owned and managed by Jockey Club Estates.

In fact, the Gallops are so important to the ‘Sport of Kings’ that there are large areas that have remained as turf since 1660 and the reign of King Charles II.

This long-enduring survival has encountered, and overcome some challenging threats throughout its history, not least the ravaging spread of agriculture and two World Wars. They even prevailed in the face of the relentless advance of the modern transport system, with the railway line having to tunnel beneath them.

The Training Grounds, historically known as Newmarket Heath, has been home to many of racing’s most famous and colourful characters – horse and human alike – over the centuries. Whilst being extremely proud of its history, Jockey Club Estates has invested millions of pounds in the Training Grounds and their facilities to ensure that they remain an international centre of excellence for Thoroughbred training.

Working Yard TourNewmarket racecourse

A Newmarket guide will not only take you up close to the horses working on this magnificent land but also open the doors to a racehorse trainer’s yard where you can see the inner workings of a busy training establishment as well as meet the trainers themselves.

This will be a behind-the-scenes view of a working racing yard. You will be shown  around and introduced to the horses, briefed on the yard routines, feeding regimes, and any questions you might have will be answered.

Racing at Newmarket

We move on and spent the afternoon on the July Course.  Your Premier tickets will take you into the most prestigious enclosures on the course where you can enjoy an afternoon of exciting racing.

The cost of this event will include luxury coach transport, your guide for the morning  tours of the gallops and working yard, your premier ticket to the racecourse and, of course, treats.
